Music and Islam

I came across a suggestion the other day that some Muslims do not approve of music, which seemed a bit drastic, so a quick peek on the internet was indicated, which turned up reference 1, containing the sort of serious discussion of holy texts that I associate with ancient Christians, fundamentalist Christians and orthodox Jews. The verdict in this case being that music is OK and the thought is that speciality causes often make for strange bedfellows.

I suppose the trouble is that popular western music is pervasive (not to say ubiquitous), very loud and strongly associated to things of which many Muslims disapprove, in particular sex, drugs and rock & roll. As do many fundamentalist Christians in the interior of the USA. An easy step from there to say that we had better ban music altogether rather than run any risk of this sort of thing infecting our young people.

Which led me to wonder if the bastions of Muslim thought allow their senior staff access to libraries of forbidden treasures (or pleasures), rather in the way that the Vatican does.

A taster is included above, in case the pointer below goes astray. In any case, you do need to page down below the large red thing.
