A once imposing beech tree at Polseden Lacey, presumably brought down in one of the winter storms and bringing the adjacent oak tree down with it. See bottom left.
Core of the beech tree soft and rotten. An example of the vulnerability of a beech tree around a fork, with, in this case, a large low fork going off and up to the right. The seam in the bark in the angle just doesn't seem to be able to keep the water out.
There is just such a seam in the oak tree in our back garden. It must have lost its lead when young, with the result that the trunk splits into two a foot or so from the ground. The seam in the bark in this angle looks a bit vulnerable too - but probably a problem for whoever comes next rather than us.
Another example of how the usually trusty Lumia sometimes gets into a muddle in bright light.
