The people of Ely can probably work out what is going on in the Middle East by looking up in the sky, as we noticed a steady procession of large, two and four engine jets which looked to be flying down into Mildenhall or Lakenheath. Presumably a staging post for the supply of men, women and matériel to parts further east.
One aeroplane appeared to be flying northeast rather than east, so not sure about that one. RAF Feltwell is in about the right place but is designated a furniture store. With gmaps offering nothing more than some odd shaped playing fields (baseball?) and what look like fuel tanks. No runways.
I did not manage to score more than one aeroplane. Not up to Earlsfield standards at all.
PS: gmaps does not seem to be bound by the Ordnance Survey convention that military bases do not exist - that being my recollection of the matter. But I suppose that touching up aerial photographs is a more complicated business than touching up a Landranger.
