Ely 4

Part of the southwest front of the cathedral. Which, apart from the elaborate decoration, got me to thinking about why it was that some Victorian dean did not try to get the northwest front rebuilt, it having fallen down back in the Middle Ages. Had it been rebuilt then, say a hundred and fifty years ago, it would have mellowed down a bit by now and been presenting a more or less united west front to the world.

Probably too late now, with the Church of England being all for giving over Bishops' Palaces to the homeless rather than new build. Maybe when the cathedrals are transferred from ecclesiastical to heritage custody, the idea might get more traction. Not to mention resting luvvies dressed up a ancient ecclesiastics, in the way of Hampton Court.
