Wartocracy

Regular readers will have noticed the interest I take in the water towers of what used to be the Epsom cluster of mental hospitals.

It is also the case that we came across the Landmark Trust while in Kent recently, and yesterday I was able top pick up a back number of their catalog of self-catering holiday accommodation for the sum of one pound from what I took to be a young Polish seller at Hook Road. A rather grand catalog with a smart red cover, very much in the style of something from English Heritage.

In which I was interested to find the water tower illustrated, somewhere on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Said to sleep four, to have splendid views and not to be fully booked. We could have had four days in September for getting on for £900. Sadly, too much, for what would have been a bit of fun. Maybe three times per diem what we would usually pay for a holiday cottage.

So we won't get to stand on top of the tank which once supplied the watery needs of all manner of Royal couples and their hangers on.

Which seemed to be the story through the catalog. Handsome and interesting buildings in all kinds of odd situations, but dear.
