An example of the sort of agricultural fence pole I associate with gentleman farmers of the late nineteenth century. You get quite a lot of them in Surrey.

Was it a patent fence pole sold to farmers with more money than common sense at agricultural fairs, did it come with barbed wire (said to be the key to the opening up of the West in the US), or did it really do a better job than a wooden one?
